An evening with Hasan Bakr
The mbira is one of the signature musical instruments of Africa. It is played with the thumbs on metal keys, and its sound is both melodic and rhythmic. The mbira is traditionally used at the center of many spiritual gatherings in Zimbabwe, leading listeners to reflect on peace, community, and healing.
Please join us for an evening of music, discussion, and community.
Hasan Bakr is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer whose musical career spans over four decades. He has studied with masters such as Chief Bey (shekere and bell), Babafeami (Conga), Nana Vasconcelos (berimbau and caxixi), Little Ray Romero (timbales), and Mbemba Bangoura (djembe). He serves as lead singer in the legendary Sprit Ensemble and Heritage OP (“organic percussion”), New York City based percussion ensembles.
